Steam & Strife

London, 1891. Victoria I, the longest reigns in the UK to date, continues its mandate. At this time, London has grown from an almost desert town without technological, medical or social advances, begins to emerge as the leading world power. The reality is very different from what is seen and what is. By day, the strict protocol governing the streets rules, society dominates people and they lived chained to their regulations. The great social differences are evident at first glance. Yet it is the time of great progress: The woman begins to gain a foothold in society, some discoveries such as the theory of "Origin of Species" was revolutionizing a religiously closed society and stretched silently and demanded change. In the environment people craving for something new smelled revolution.

Murders, public executions were part of the daily life of citizens making it look normal. Fear lay in the streets as one where no one was sure. At any time, anyone could be attacked by murderers leaving no trail. Various names are famous for these cases, as Jack the Ripper, which if you're nobody in society was easier than anyone could fault you.

However, at night everything changes. A second scenario comes out, one in which sin, lust, freedom and the desire to form a change prevails. The night was responsible for hiding the reality: in the City of London many brothels, performance halls, arcades, the streets, theatres - environments that starkly contrast the strict adherence which was played throughout the day. Giving in to their most wanton desires, society, regardless of class, delves into proclivity.

And that's not all. That is the reality that everyone is able to see: But there is still a reality invisible to the world. The existence of supernatural beings is still inexplicable to society. We currently treat the existence of these beings as evil tales told, being punished to the fact of their appointment. While many, werewolves, changelings, demons, ghosts and vampires walk freely through the city, being quite effective in their attempt to hide their true identity and carry out their crimes unpunished.

With this in mind - secret societies were set in London, these occult “Lodges” attracted the elite of London society – poets and politicians, actors and heiresses, alchemists and aristocrats scheming against a backdrop of cut glass, in the age of absinthe.
